The pros and cons of a smart doorbell

This is a collaborative post

Smart doorbells are one of many items that households are now installing. With news that making your home ‘smarter’ can add up to £16,000 to the value of your property, a smart doorbell is certainly worth considering.

What is a smart home?

In the UK, there are around 2.22 million smart homes. A smart home is any property that has appliances that are connected to your smartphone either by Wi-Fi, 4G or Bluetooth. They enable the user to control devices, even when they’re not at home.

Smart devices range from light switches that can be dimmed without leaving the sofa to kettles that boil before you get out of bed. As we move increasingly towards a digital world, smart homes will not only become the norm, but they’ll become smarter too.

What is a smart doorbell?

Like a traditional doorbell, a smart doorbell alerts the homeowner that someone is at the door. However, unlike a traditional doorbell, with a smart doorbell, you can see who’s at your door, even if you’re not in.

Connected to the internet, a smart doorbell will ‘ring’ on your chosen device and will provide you with a real-time video display of your front door. Providing you with a security camera, smart doorbells are a useful security feature for any home.

Pros

Extra security

Perhaps one of the main reasons people install a door entry system is the added level of security they offer. A smart doorbell allows homeowners to see in real-time who’s at their door. Many devices offer two-way audio which adds an extra layer of protection.

Record events

Should something occur, a smart doorbell will have recorded the incident. Most systems are set to record automatically every time the motion sensor is set off.

Easy to install

If you’re not an avid DIYer or you’re not tech-savvy, then installing anything can seem daunting, but smart doorbells are easy to install. There’s no wiring, all you have to do is attach the doorbell to the outside of your house and connect it the home’s Wi-Fi. Download the corresponding app and away you go.

Cons

Require internet connection

Because a smart doorbell requires an internet connection, there is a chance it could slow your internet speed. In addition, if it’s set to record, videos will automatically be saved to the cloud, which could come with an additional cost.

Limited view

If you’re only getting a smart doorbell for the benefit of a security camera, you’d be better off installing a security camera as the field of vision is much smaller and the camera quality of a doorbell isn’t designed to be solely used as a security device.

Can be hacked

Because smart home technology is relatively new, like any IoT device, it can be hacked. If it’s hacked, there is a risk that all your personal data and information can be stolen because the hacker will have access to your network.
