Our first geocaching adventure

We had our first geocaching adventure yesterday and I think we now all have the geocaching bug!

It was really good fun, even though we didn’t find our first two caches and as soon as we opened the car doors at the first location, the heavens opened and soaked us through!

A man who lived next to the first cache came out to help us after letting us try to find the the first cache for about 10 minutes but even then we couldn’t find it and we think it may have fallen into the water.
The ones we were looking for were 35mm photo film sized canisters and contained a log book only so it’s not always about the treasure, just finding it and logging it is fun in itself but we didn’t have any luck with the second find either so we headed home for lunch and all got changed into warm, dry clothes!

We went to a different location for our next adventure and the kids were really excited when we finally found our first one ๐Ÿ™‚

They weren’t so excited with the treasure! We’re not sure what the grey thing was so we left it in the tub with the keyboard F4 key and Kaycee took the dice.

We left an eraser and a grey figure which the kids tell me is called a bungee!

We signed the log and I logged our find on geocaching.com when we got home.

We decided to go and look for another one that was close by and set off on what turned out to be a lovely walk (the rain stopped and the sun came out) but longer than I expected! I’m just getting over a bad back and the long walk hurt my hips and knees a bit but not enough to spoil the fun.

We were searching round for ages trying to find the next cache and I did wonder if the kids were going to get fed up but everyone kept looking until I eventually found it in a log. The kids had checked it at the start but only checked one end!

Kaycee chose the pencil sharpener and Ella picked the keyring ๐Ÿ™‚

We signed the log, left our treasures (a little penguin phone thing that flashes when your phone rings or gets a text message and I think it was another eraser but I could be wrong) and put it bag in the hiding place.

On the walk back we saw some lovely ducklings ๐Ÿ™‚

We were going to do and see if we could find one more on the way home but by the time we got back to the car we were shattered and opted to go straight home.

I can’t wait to go again and I think we’re going to become premium members very soon!

I really want to try geocaching but have no idea where to start – i am rubbish with maps and directions

    1. shelllouise 13th May 2014 at 9:00 pm

So am I Kara but the app makes it easy because you just walk in the direction it points you to then it's a case of searching in the general area until you find the treasure ๐Ÿ™‚ Just sign up to geocaching.com to get started and it's all explained there ๐Ÿ™‚ xx

this looks fun, but i still don't get what geocaching is? still, a good way to explore!

    1. shelllouise 13th May 2014 at 8:31 am

It's like a treasure hunt Laura. People hide water proof boxes with little treasures in and a log book then they put the location on geocaching.com. You go to geocaching.com, sign up for a free account then put your location in and it will show you all the hidden boxes near your location. You download the app, choose which cache you want to look for then click start and the GPS on your phone will help you navigate close to the area of the hidden box. You then have to search to find it. One of ours was at the base of a tree and the other was hidden in a hollow log. You can swap the treasures you find inside for treasures of an equal or greater value or just sign the log then mark it as found on your app or the website ๐Ÿ™‚

It is disappointing when you dont find what you are looking for, but a 50% strike rate is about average. Looks like you all had great fun, it really is a great way to get all the children involved and the older ones love it as much as the younger ones.
Lots of great looking countryside there, and had a laugh at the man of the house coming out to help.
We always forget to pick up treasures to swap, but nice that you took some.
Thank you for linking up, look forward to seeing more.

Almost everywhere in the world (except the remotest) has geocaches. Just go here:
      http://www.geocaching.com/map/#?ll=31.05293,11.25&z=2
and zoom into your location. You'll be amazed at how many caches there are locally.

    2. Elaine Livingstone 12th May 2014 at 9:44 pm

this page will either find your location for you and show you a list of caches near you, just go to the top and click "map this location" and it will show you a map of your area with them on. enjoy Kate https://www.geocaching.com/
