105 / 365 Kitchen Makeover – End of day six

The shelves are up 😀
We’ve both been working on various jobs in the kitchen all day and we’re absolutely shattered now.
I’m going to finish getting everything put away tomorrow while Ant sorts out all the power points then he’s going to get the rest of the floor down.
We’ve nearly filled all the shelves that Ant put up today and I have to say I’m loving my new pink jar 😀

I still have the kitchen cupboards to paint but I’ll do them last thing tomorrow night and varnish them each night when the kids have gone to bed.
I’m now off to play some Wizard 101 and catch up with Corrie…..two things that are sure to help me unwind!

104 / 365 – Kitchen Makeover – End of Day Five

Has it really only been five days since we started the kitchen? It feels like many many more!

I want my living room back now, I want to be able to walk to the door without having to turn into a crab and walk sideways.

See that chair there? Well it used to be painted white and was decorated with lots of scratches, stains and chips (no darling hubby, not the potato kind!).
It’s now half decoupaged in green. The wrong green. It took me about four hours to cover the top half of the chair and ten seconds to take it into the kitchen to dry, only to find that it doesn’t look right because the green is the wrong shade!
Being the stupid incredibly intelligent person I am!, I never once took my chosen, printed pattern into the kitchen to see if the green on the paper matched the green on the walls before I started decoupaging.
The green on the paper is no where the green on the walls and I now have to find a green pattern that I like and that matches the walls.
I also have to either go over this chair with white paper*, hoping to cover the green, or do the other three chairs in the same green to then have to go over them all in my new, not yet found, green pattern. The reason being, it’s likely this green will show through and change the colour of my new green, leaving me with one odd chair.
This is now a project for another time when the children are away because I’m running out of time to get the kitchen finished.

The good thing is, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel….finally!

My SUPER WONDERFUL HUSBAND** has started getting the shelves up and he’s going to get the rest up in the morning. This means I can then get everything put away and Ant can get the rest of the floor down as soon as I’m done 🙂
I’m hoping to do my ‘before and after’ post sometime on Sunday 🙂

*EDIT: My SUPER WONDERFUL HUSBAND has just pointed out to me that I can just paint the chair white again…..doh! *slaps forehead*

**See his comment on yesterday’s post to find out why it’s in capitals!

103 / 365 – Kitchen makeover, end of day four

Thanks to my wonderful hubby, we now have cupboards back on the wall and part of the new floor down.
I don’t think anyone, in the universe, ever disliked a floor as much as I dislike the one that was down when we moved in and that we’ve had ever since.
I really can’t wait to see all the new floor tiles down and finally get rid of that old floor!

Ant’s been busy all day and as well as doing the cupboards and floor tiles, he’s put our brand new counter in, I have to say that I LOVE IT 😀
Before going to bed, he also tiled the wall above the new counter. It looks wonderful and I’m so much happier than I was this time last night!

I’m not taking any pictures of the new counter yet; we’re close to finishing and I want to post the before and after pictures at the weekend.

I’ve just finished giving the shelves and brackets a coat of gloss so Ant can get them put up tomorrow.
The only painting I have left to do is the bottom cupboard doors then I can get everything put back.

Organising and setting out all the new stuff is the best part of decorating a room and it’s the part I most look forward to 🙂

102 / 365 – Kitchen makeover, end of day three

Worked all day, now shattered and a bit fed up so today’s post is mainly pictures!

Today’s 365 photo….because I soooo needed this after all
I’ve done today!

Oh no, the tassimo supply is getting low and I don’t have a Tesco
delivery this week…….wonder if hubby will take the hint and call
at Morrison’s tomorrow, seeing as they always have my favourite caramel
flavour ones!

101 / 365 – Kitchen makeover, end of day two

Why is it, when decorating a room, the first few days feel like you’re never going to get anywhere. I’ve been on the go since just before ten this morning and it feels like I haven’t even made a dent in the amount of work that needs doing.
I’ve washed, sanded and undercoated 2 shelves, 4 brackets, 4 large pieces of Contiboard, some skirting and part of the door frame. I painted the cupboards and 3 doors, giving them two coats each and I washed the fridge, freezer, washer and dryer.
I painted some of the walls, giving them two coats of emulsion and I’m now doing this post and waiting ’til 9pm so I can varnish the cupboards and doors. They needed four hours for the emulsion to cure before another coat can be done.

It feels like there’s a mountain left to climb and I need to get to the top before the kids come back on Sunday.
Wish me luck!

Today’s 365 photo….loving my cupboard doors; all nice
and clean again 🙂

100 / 365 – Kitchen Makeover – End of day one

We’ve had a busy day and I’m shattered but unfortunately, it’s just the start of what promises to be a very busy week. We went to B&M, The Range and B&Q this morning to stock up on everything we need for the kitchen makeover as well the bathroom and bedroom makeovers we’re going to be doing over the coming weeks.

We couldn’t bring the new counter for the kitchen today because the saw in B&Q wasn’t working. Ant’s going to go back for it on Thursday…fingers crossed it will be mended by then!

We started emptying the kitchen after lunch, well as much as we could fit into the living room! It’s a good job we’ve got the TV on the wall now because if it was still on the TV cabinet, we wouldn’t be able to see it.
Ant took the cupboards down then I cleaned them and put a coat of undercoat on. Cleaning the top of those cupboards was an awful job. I don’t think they’ve ever been cleaned since they were put up in February 1992 (there was a sticker on the top signed by the person who did the quality control check when they were installed!) and the layer of grease was horrible, even though I’m ashamed to admit that!

Anyway. enough of my embarrassing admissions. I need to get some sleep ready for the full day of work ahead tomorrow.

Today’s 365 photo ‘cos I’m excited that I’m finally going to make these cupboards look nice!

89 / 365 New fire place – Before and After photos

Last week our living room looked like this:

then Ant phones from work and says, what do you think about putting the TV on the wall and getting a fire surround.

Now our room looks like this:

Today’s 365 photo

and I. LOVE. IT. 🙂

We spent the morning shopping for new ornaments; probably the best way to spend a morning, if you’re me! (not so much if you’re Ant!!) and I have to say, The Range just may be my new favourite shop.
It was hard to choose because there’s so much to choose from!

I can’t wait to start on our kitchen once the kids have gone away for the week on Easter Sunday.
It’s going to be a lot of work but I know it’s going to be totally worth it. I’ve been wanting to do something drastic with the kitchen for ages and I can now finally get it done 🙂

85 / 365 – Work in progress

We got a great bargain on Ebay yesterday. We won an auction for a fire surround and the winning price was £22 😀
We’d been looking at fire surrounds at B&Q and the cheapest was £159. We were going to get that one but I said I’d check Ebay first. I’m so pleased I did!

We’ve put the TV on the wall and are in the process of fixing the fire place to the wall. We’re not sure if the TV is a bit too high (my fault because I told Ant where to put it!) and we may end up moving it down a bit.

You can’t see the fire and surround very well because it’s a bit dark but I’ll be taking some better photos of the entire wall once it’s all finished and I’ll do a before and after post 🙂
I can’t wait to get it all done; the bad things about making changes is the mess it creates while the work’s being done!
I’ve bought some new ornaments to go on the fireplace and some pictures to go on the wall in place of the family photos we had up; I’ll be spending ages tomorrow getting them put back on the wall up the stairs.

83 / 365 – Changes

We’ve decided to mount our new TV on the wall, above where it’s sitting at the moment and in its place, we’re going to have a decorative fire with surround, hearth and mantel.

I’m really excited about making the change because I’ve wanted a fireplace for ages 🙂
We’re now one step closer because today we got our new fire. I’m still shopping around for a fire surround and will be checking Ebay regularly over the next month!

The surround I’ve been looking at in B&Q will fit nicely in the place of the TV stand but we’re not sure where we’re going to put the DVD player and TiVo box.
I’m sure my wonderful hubby will come with a great solution to the problem soon!

We’re also going to lose our photo wall but there’s plenty of space on the stair wall to hang them so I’m not too worried about that.

I’ll be back with photos when it’s all done 🙂

Entryway Makeover

I keep seeing lovely entryways on Pinterest or when browsing Better Homes & Gardens. For a while now I’ve wanted somewhere more organised for the girls to store their coats/shoes/bags/helmets/hats/scarves etc

We had a set of drawers and a bookcase in the hall before I decorated the bedrooms and the girls had a small space at the side of the bookcase to hang their coats. It wasn’t big enough for school bags as well, in fact it was barely big enough for their school and play coats!

I put the set of drawers into the girls room when I decorated it and moved the bookcase to the space left by the drawers. This gave me a full wall to make a place for the girls to store all their outer wear.

I’d have loved to create something like this

but this would cost significantly more (especially seeing as we’d have to start by buying a bigger house!) than I wanted to spend so I set my sights lower!

This is the hall before the makeover:

and here’s how it looks now:

I started by painting the original coat rack white then went to B&M and bought a couple of new coat racks for £2.99 each and a set of 3 baskets for £9.99.
I already had the shelf in the shed. It used to be in the girls room before we decorated and it was from the B&Q value range, a bargain at only £3.98.

When they come home from school, they put their school coats on the middle coat rack so that in the morning, the radiator warms them up!

The nice, neat shoe box belongs to KayCee and the messy one belongs to Ella. I was going to straighten Ella’s shoes in her basket to make it look good for the photo but I figure it shows their different personalities and needed to stay 🙂

The pictures of the girls would have had to be moved slightly higher to fit the basket on the shelf so I decided to move them to another wall and I plan on getting the kids to make a nice big piece of art to fill the space.
For the time being, we’ve got the photos they had taken with various characters from our Butlins holiday last year (hiding the holes until I get round to filling them and repainting the wall!) and I just used Blue Tac to put them up seeing as I still haven’t gotten around to framing them yet.

So (including the shelf) the total cost of the makeover was £19.95 and I’m really very pleased with it 🙂
