The festive season will be here before long, placing firmly in your lap the responsibility of once again bringing your home into the Christmas spirit.

Whether you are an avid Christmas fan that likes to go all out for the holidays, or a Scrooge-ly curmudgeon that’s putting on a brave face for the family, keeping on top of all the decorations is not the easiest of tasks. What are some of the essential decorations you need to be preparing before the holidays come knocking?

Christmas Tree and Ornaments

Arguably the most important decorations in any festive household are those that adorn the Christmas tree. The Christmas tree, whether real or plastic, is the centrepiece of the festivities – the place around which family gathers, and under which Christmas gifts magically appear. Your decorations should reflect your personality as much as the season, from the colour of the tinsel to the shape of the baubles.

Stockings

Stockings are another festive standard, especially so if you have a fireplace over which to hang them. Stockings can be made all the more fun by having your family each make and decorate their own stocking.

Candles and Table Decorations

There are numerous other kinds of ornaments and decorations you can deploy around your home, but in terms of essentials, your dinner table should be next on the list. Candlesticks and your best tablecloths are a must, as are the good napkins – and napkin holders if you have them!

Exterior Lights

One of the quintessential signifiers that Christmas is indeed on the way is when your eager neighbour puts up their overly elaborate Christmas lighting display. Outdoor lights are a fun way to get into the Christmas spirit, and, though they take a little planning and elbow grease to get installed, can quickly turn your home into a festive wonderland. Some people may be interested in fitting some exterior lights, but might not be sure where to begin if they’ve never done it before. This is understandable, as there are several important factors to take into consideration. Fortunately however, you can hire Christmas Light Installation services to take care of this for you, giving you peace of mind that you’ll have an appealing display without the risk of messing anything up.

Wreath and Mistletoe

Whether or not you are particularly fussed with outwardly professing your festive cheer in the form of garden and house displays, a wreath on the front door is nothing short of essential – non-negotiable, even. Festive wreaths are a treasure to behold and can bring light and love to any front door.

This is especially true if they are paired with mistletoe, which can be tantalisingly hung from your porch or simply attached to your front door’s lintel. These items are not the biggest or most expensive, but they can do a lot to make your home feel welcoming and festive.

Garden Nativity Scene

If you are a family of faith, you may wish to honour this with the inclusion of a nativity scene in your garden decoration plans. This can be as simple as a diorama in the window, but if you have the time and inclination your lawn could be the perfect stage for a scale model of the nativity scene.
