There is nothing more frustrating than when you are cooking or having a bath and your boiler suddenly decides to stop working. A boiler is an integral part of the home because it is what provides hot water for your taps and also what produces the hot water for your radiators to keep the home warm.

If you do find that your boiler has stopped working, there are certain steps you will want to take:

Contact Your Insurer

The first thing you will want to do when your boiler stops working is contact your insurance company and let them know what has happened. Your insurance company will then make it their job to contact an engineer for you and they will come to fix the issue. They will also cover at least some of the cost of the repair so that you don’t have to fork out the whole sum right away.

Contact The Manufacturer

If your boiler is fairly new and you still have it under a warranty you can then proceed to contact the manufacturer and tell them what has happened. Every company is different so the level of aid you get will vary, but the best case scenario would be that they replace your boiler for free.

Call Your Landlord

If you don’t own your home, the next call you will want to make is to your landlord because it is their responsibility to sort out the issue for you. Most landlords will usually have a preferred electrician, plumber and engineer ready for issues like this so they will get in contact and set up a time for the repair.

Call An Engineer

If you do own your home you will want to get in touch with an engineer who is qualified for gas. It is crucial you check that they are gas safe for your own safety and the safety of your home. A broken down boiler can be dangerous so you need to set up a time for repair as soon as you can, ideally within 24 hours. Make sure you tell the engineer about the problem in as much detail as you can because they will be able to prepare and make sure they have the right tools with them.

Keep Warm

It is incredibly important while you wait for your gas boiler repair that you keep your home safe to live in and as warm as you can. This is especially true in the winter if you have young children or old relatives in the house. You need to make sure that you light plenty of candles in the evenings, bring out your thickest blankets and make sure everyone in the house has slippers to walk around in. If the work on your boiler is going to take more than a day it might be worth investing in an electric heater for a few days to keep you and your family warm during those cold days. Even once the boiler is fixed, having an electric heater can be handy for your young children or old relatives.
