Modern life is hectic.  Many of us juggle careers, family, pets and recreational activities. Life can be simpler and more enjoyable if we can make daily household chores more palatable. Streamlining our domestic duties and organising our home can help us all have more time to devote to our family and social activities. Here are four ways to run an organised and efficient family home.

A Place for Everything

Assigning household items to specific places means that they can be found easily when needed and valuable time is not wasted time looking for them. Coats can be hung up on hooks behind a door, cleaning products in a cupboard under the kitchen sink and keys in a dish on the hall table.

Labelling storage containers or areas may also help family members to know where to put things so clutter is reduced. Giving children attractive baskets or boxes may encourage them to put their belongings in a place other than on their bedroom floor!

Time Saving Equipment

Everyone can do with a helping hand when it comes to household chores. There are many appliances and gadgets on the market to assist us. Microwaves to help us cut down cooking time or automatic washing machines to do the laundry while we work.

However, appliances can take up valuable space. It is wise to plan the best layout for the area in which they are to be situated.  For example, if you have a small kitchen,  you may not be able to fit a tumble dryer in as well as a washing machine. Fortunately, there are two types of tumble dryer – vented and condenser.  Vented tumble dryers have a hose attachment that needs to be directed outside of the house to let the moisture out. Condenser dryers are good for small spaces as they can be placed anywhere in the house and don’t have to be close to an external wall. They can even go in the garage, which will free up space in a small kitchen.

Prepare the Night Before

Time is of the essence when getting ready to go to work or school in the morning and can be the most hectic time of the day in most households. Laying out clothes at night for the following day, preparing packed lunches, and packing school bags can help save time in the morning.  This makes for a more smooth-running morning routine and minimises frayed tempers!

Meal Planning

Meals can be cooked in large batches and frozen. Doing this saves cooking from scratch every evening. If taken out the freezer in the morning to defrost, they can be quickly cooked on the return home for the evening meal or even placed in a slow cooker before leaving the house.

Meal planning is another good idea. At the start of every week, decide what meals the family would like to eat each night. Compile a shopping list with the required ingredients. Doing this should cut down on time spent shopping or wondering what to eat each night.
