My Indesit Dishwasher Caught Fire!

I can’t say I’ve ever heard of a dishwasher setting on fire before so it was very surprising when my Indesit dishwasher did exactly that.

Indesit dishwasher caught fire

A couple of weeks ago I’d just started playing a board game with Aiden, Kaycee and Ella when I got a feeling that something wasn’t right with the dishwasher.
I’d filled it and switched it on just before we got the game out and about 20 minutes later I thought I heard a funny noise coming from the kitchen.

I’d got a bad back at the time and was hobbling around using a walking stick so to save me having to get up and check, Ella went to see what the noise was.
She shouted that smoke was coming out of the dishwasher so I told Aiden to run and switch the electric off.

Ant came in just as I made it to the kitchen and thankfully took over the saving of our new house from fire!
He grabbed a fire extinguisher that had been left by the previous owner, from under the stairs (thank you so much Mr J; ours was still in a box in the garage somewhere!) and put the fire out before any damage was done to the rest of the kitchen.

We had to stand outside for ages while the smoke cleared. The smell was awful and took days to properly go.

The white powder from the fire extinguisher went everywhere. It just floated on the air and covered everything in the kitchen and living room with a fine layer of dust.

Ant and the kids had to do the majority of the clean up because I couldn’t stand for long periods.

I phoned Indesit who arranged for an engineer to come and inspect the dishwasher 3 days later.

He arrived and did his inspection and told me someone would phone me later that day to arrange to have the dishwasher collected and a new one delivered.

I was delighted that theyย were going to replace it. I didn’t expect a replacement because the dishwasher was 5 years old, I thought they’d give us money off a new one as a goodwill gesture or something so a brand new dishwasher was brilliant and I was very grateful.
We’ve had to buy a new washer and freezer in the last couple of months and the budget has been stretched too far to include a new dishwasher as well!

I was disappointed when no one called me that day as the engineer had said. I waited until Monday and still, no one phoned so I phoned them.

To cut a long story a little bit shorter, I had to phone a couple more times that week until I actually got to speak to someone who could arrange the collection and delivery.
I told the guy the model I’d like if possible and he was happy to send the one I wanted ๐Ÿ˜€

That was last Friday and my brand new dishwasher was delivered yesterday.

It’s lovely! It’s so much quieter than the old one and I love the digital display, telling me how long it’s got left to run ๐Ÿ™‚
It makes nice little beeping noises when the cycle has finished and when you switch it off!
I’m really happy with my new, bigger and better dishwasher so I’d like to say a huge thank you to Indesit.

Unfortunately, all is not as well as it should be though because the driver who delivered the dishwasher and took the old one, managed to rip our new kitchen flooring in two places.
We only put it down in April ๐Ÿ™

Excuse the dirty floor, lots of the powder from the fire extinguisher came out of the dishwasher when it was moved. What with all the mess of removing one dishwasher and bringing in another, people walking all over it and water escaping from the old dishwasher has left the floor in a state. I’ve still to get the mop out and clean it yet because my back and hip has been playing up again today.

We now have to replace the entire floor ๐Ÿ™ It seems like it’s one thing after another just lately. I’m hoping this is the last of the bad luck regarding the kitchen and white goods because I’ve about had my fill now!

I’ve emailed Indesit to let them know about the floor. I feel awful because I’m so grateful for the dishwasher and don’t want to get anyone in trouble but I feel like it’s unfair to us to have to replace a floor we’ve only just paid for about 6 months ago when we weren’t the ones who ripped it.

Goodness me, that is scary-I'd not heard of one catching fire before. Glad you are all ok though. Hope you get some good luck soon. We go through patches of bad luck too. x

Oh my – how lucky that you were awake at home when it happened. I dread to think if you had left it on at night. I'm shocked too as I had never heard of dishwashers going on fire either.

Glad you had a fire extinguisher to hand! And that no-one was hurt. Hopefully they will compensate you for the floor, as none of it was your fault.

It is great that they replaced the dishwasher, but I would ensure they sorted out the floor x

I'm glad no-one was hurt. It's a goodwill gesture from Indesit but you would wonder why they happily gave you the model you wanted and replaced without any trouble. I would definitely persue the floor as it wasn't your fault.

How scary! I am glad no serious damage was done. It is great of Indesit to replace it and I am sure they will do something about the floor too. Everything always happens at once doesn't it!

How frightening! I know a lot of people put theirs on before going to bed. I've never a dishwasher as my kitchen is tiny. I think I'm glad now!

Wow, I am glad that no one was hurt in the fire and that your dishwasher was replaced. I would really take it up with them about the floor. They or the delivery firm should replace it

This was also in the news recently, about Indesit dishwashers catching fire so you won't be the first to contact them. Indesit and Hotpoint (bought by Indesit) have a terrible reputation currently for shoddy products, Hotpoint washing machine cases are such thin metal our recent engineer said he's seen several which have been pierced!
