Dear Diary – Our Week, a day late!

Somehow I forgot to do our dear diary post last week so this one will cover the last two weeks, depending on how much I can remember!

Dear Diary

Charity Shop Interview

I went for an interview at our local charity shop last week as I applied to be a volunteer. The interview went well, as did my first afternoon.
I found all the procedures for sorting and pricing the clothes, bedding, curtains etc really easy to pick up and I was fine on the steamer, but then after managing a laundry it would have been a bit embarrassing if I weren’t!

I really enjoy working there. All the people are lovely and it’s great to get out and chat to people instead of being at home all the time.
Also, I get to see all the books as they come in and can have the first pick before they go out on the shelves!
I’ve already put about 10 children’s Christmas books to the side for me to pick up next week. I want to collect 24 books so I can wrap them up and the girls can open one each night at bedtime during advent 🙂

This week the girls were eagerly awaiting Halloween because they were going to a party with my best friend, Jo.

Dear Diary - KayCee in her Halloween costume

Dear Diary - Ella in her Halloween costume

They had a great time if the photos on Facebook are anything to go by! Kaycee said she was too hot all night because she did loads of dancing 🙂

They phoned last night to say they were going to see some fireworks at a public display in town. They were very excited. They’d been asking if we could have some fireworks in the garden but I’m hoping we don’t have to now they’ve been to a proper display!

Brownie’s Christmas Fair

Kaycee had a friend round for the day on Thursday. They both go to Brownies and next Saturday is the Brownie’s Christmas fayre, Instead of going in uniform and helping out on the Brownie stalls, they want to rent a table and run their own raffle.

They’ve borrowed some money from Ant and he took them to the shops to buy chocolate and biscuits for the hamper prize.

They made posters and decorated the box for the hamper then arranged all the prizes inside. I must say it looks really good.
They’re going to have a small Christmas tree on the table with shaped gift tags hanging from it. You pay a pound, pick a gift tag and write your name and number on the back then put it in a box for the winner to picked randomly when all the gift tags have been sold.
If they sell all the gift tags they’ve worked out they should make £10 each after paying Ant back for the table rent and the raffle prize.
They’ll then probably spend their earnings on all the other stalls at the fayre!!

Movies 24

Talking of Christmas (which I’m sure I’m allowed to do now Halloween is over, right?!), Movies 24 has now changed to Christmas 24 and this makes me very happy! Admittedly, I’ve been watching Christmas for the past week because True Movies changed to True Christmas a week or so ago and though I tried not to watch them in October, I couldn’t help myself!

Send an email to your future self :)

I’ve sent an email to my future self using Future Me. It’s one of my 101 in 1001 day zero project.

Dear Future Me - Send an email to future self

You can keep it private or set it to public, I’ve kept mine private. You can choose any date in the future to have your email sent to you so I’ve set mine for the day my 101 in 1001 ends, June 15th 2017.

I’ve been reading other people’s future letters and some of them are really interesting.

There’s one that says it’s 2009 and if the writer and Sarah aren’t married in 5 years they have to marry each other,
I wish I could find out what happened there, seeing as 2014 is 5 years later!

Another that was sent last year is a bit sad to read because the writer isn’t at all happy with her husband after she said she gave up a beautiful house, family and friends to move for an opportunity for him and things didn’t work out as planned.
I hope they’ve been able to sort things out and she isn’t, as she put it, ‘in the pokey for hitting her husband over the head with a rock’.

Mine’s not nearly as interesting as some of the public ones! It’s mainly about being at a healthy weight by my 40th birthday 🙂

What would you write to your future self?

Read 100 Books #2 – Mr Mercedes #101in1001

Mr Mercedes by Stephen King

I’ve been a big Stephen King fan ever since first watching IT on video when I was about 15. That week I went to the library and borrowed the book. I couldn’t put it down and since then I’ve read nearly all of his books.

I own quite a lot but in recent years I haven’t been as obsessed with buying every book as soon as I could so there are a few missing from my collection at the moment.

I did hint to to my S.W.H. (super wonderful husband) that I really wanted Mr Mercedes when we saw it in Asda a short while before my birthday and he remembered!

I’ve just finished reading it and have to say I really enjoyed it. It’s not the usual horror/supernatural story you expect from Stephen King and it was a welcome change.

Here’s the blurb:

A cat-and-mouse suspense thriller featuring a retired homicide detective who’s haunted by the few cases he left open, and by one in particular – the pre-dawn slaughter of eight people among hundreds gathered in line for the opening of a jobs fair when the economy was guttering out. Without warning, a lone driver ploughed through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes. The plot is kicked into gear when Bill Hodges receives a letter in the mail, from a man claiming to be the perpetrator. He taunts Hodges with the notion that he will strike again.

Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, hell-bent on preventing that from happening.

Brady Hartsfield lives with his alcoholic mother in the house where he was born. And he’s preparing to kill again.

Only Hodges, with a couple of misfit friends, can apprehend the killer in this high-stakes race against time. Because Brady’s next mission, if it succeeds, will kill or maim hundreds, even thousands.

I read yesterday that Mr King is going to be writing more books about retired Detective Hodges and I can’t wait 🙂

Dear Diary Our Week – October 12th

Dear Diary October 12th

October 12th – Last week we bought Halloween costumes, this week we’ve had to buy clothes for the wedding we’re going to next Saturday.
It’s Ant’s niece’s wedding in Yorkshire and the girls are really excited about going. I’ve got to get up early so I can curl their hair with one of those ringlet curling tongs!

I nipped to Asda today with Ant and we bought Kaycee a new dress, shoes, tights and cardigan. Ella had shoes, cardigan and tights but no new dress because she’s already got one.
I bought some new shoes for myself and Ant bought me a gorgeous new white orchid 🙂
I’ve got a lovely pink one that my father in law bought me for my birthday a few years ago and I love it. It flowers for months at a time and the flowers are just so pretty.

We’ve been checking out different types of self-catering accommodation in Wales and Scotland this week as we’re planning our holiday for next year in October.
We’ve been looking at Haven, Hoseason’s and some private rentals. We haven’t found the perfect place yet but we’ve got plenty of time to keep searching.
Ant wants to stay by a lake so he can take the kids canoeing and I’d like to go somewhere with woods and lots of wildlife so I can take loads of photos.

We seem to have been inundated with review products this week. The girls have got loom bands, headbands, dress up clothes and noisy toys to review and Ant’s been sent an e-cig to try because he’s giving up smoking so look out for all those sometime this week!

How’s your week been?

Dear Diary Our week – Oct 5th

I’ve never been very good at keeping a diary but I’m going to try writing a weekly one rather than a daily one as part of my #101in1001 project.

Oct 5th – This is the week we bought Halloween costumes for Kaycee and Ella. Thankfully Aiden’s not bothered about Halloween so he didn’t want a costume. I don’t know if it’s just me but it feels like Halloween costumes are getting much more expensive than they were when Aiden was younger.
I used to be able to get him one for less than a fiver and now you’re lucky if they’re less than a tenner!

Dear Diary Oct 5th

This was also the week we all had to be treated for scabies.
To be honest, I’ve never had to deal with scabies before so I had no idea what it was; I had to Google to find out and it’s not nice.
I haven’t had any symptoms but I read it can take weeks for the itching to start so it didn’t matter if we hadn’t had symptoms, we had to cover ourselves in cream from the neck down.
Poor Kaycee seems to have been affected worse than the rest of us. She’s had terrible itching, so much so it’s been waking her up in the night. The doctor thought it might be eczema so we’d been treating her for that.
Ella’s itching was starting to get worse and when we took her he said they were both suffering from scabies.
Hopefully, we’re all clear now but it says the itching can carry on for a few weeks so poor Kaycee and Ella have to live with it for a bit longer yet.

I handed a form into the charity shop this week to become a volunteer. I go in quite regularly to see what new books they’ve got in and they always seem really lovely. I think it will do me good to get out more 🙂
I bought 2 Thomas Harris books from there the other day, I now only need one more and I’ll have the set of The Silence of the Lambs books.

The kids have just come home from Aiden’s dad’s and they brought his dad’s new puppy, Dash, to see me. He’s soooo cute!

I think that’s all for this week 🙂

Book suggestions

As part of my new #101in1001 project, I’ve challenged myself to read 100 books in 1001 days.
I don’t read as much as I used to because I’m busier now, but I do miss reading.
I used to stay awake all night if a book got me hooked! As a teenager, the Virginia Andrews books were my favourite and I binge read them every chance I got!

Book Suggestions

Another of my challenges is to read 5 books, each one suggested by a different person so I’d appreciate any suggestions! Feel free to leave them in the comments.

I like a wide range of genres and I’m happy to try books I wouldn’t normally choose 🙂

My day in photos #101in1001

I’m crossing off one of my #101in1001 tasks today. This was my day in photos. We took Nanny to Surprise View because it was her late husband’s favourite place. We had ice cream and a lovely lunch at the Wetherby Whaler.

Finding old books in the attic

When we moved here six months ago we had lots of boxes of old books that had been stored in the attic at our old house. We didn’t have enough space to have them on bookcases or shelves so they spent 10 years in the dark.

The majority of them were bought by Ant before we met so I’d never seen them properly.

New Bookcases

When we moved here we knew we wanted to get them all on shelves so Ant built some bookcases each side of the fireplace and we planned on putting up more shelves in the living room to accommodate them all.
Until we found the time to paint the new shelves and get them up we stacked all the books on the new shelves, double layered and packed in where ever they’d fit. You can read about that here 🙂

Old Books

I’ve finally got round to getting the new shelves painted white so while the books are piled everywhere, I’m trying to get them organised and listed on Goodreads.
I’ve done about 600 so far and I’ve only done about a quarter of them! It’s going to be a long job but one I’m really enjoying because I’ve been finding treasures I never knew we had, like this book of poems by Robert Browning that was given as a Christmas present in 1910 🙂

This book about careless talk costing lives from World War Two fascinated me. It even has a little stamp that you put on your telephone to remind you that someone else could be listening.
It has cartoons showing different scenarios of being overheard by the enemy.

Another book I found has the date 1863 in it. It has some lovely pictures.

I’ve still got the other side to empty yet and that side has the majority of the old books on it so I’m excited to see what else I’m going to find 🙂
