Five Reasons To Never Get Steam Mops And Cleaners

Gone are the days of having to carry heavy buckets of hot water up and down stairs if you want clean floors. Goodbye to spreading dirt around rather than picking it up. Farewell to slippery when wet signs or being unable to walk on floors for an hour while they dried.

Modern life keeps bringing us new things to make life just that little bit easier, and a steam mop is just one of those inventions that people don’t realize how much they needed it until they get one – and as soon as you have one you’ll then spend quite some time on sites like looking at the tips and tricks to get extra use out of it.

1.    I Love The Clean Room Smell

There is something about the smell of the ammonia found in most floor cleaning products that tends to bring up a sense of cleanliness. Unfortunately, once the floor has dried that smell dissipates quite quickly and you’re left with your normal room, with a floor that has a clean surface, but probably still has ingrained dirt that just doesn’t come out with normal mopping.

If you are using a good mop with a decent hot water mist, then you will find not only does your floor look noticeably different, particularly if you have older patterned linoleum, but it will actually smell better. You probably won’t even notice the scent of your home at the moment, but you will likely notice the difference once it has been well cleaned.

2.    I Have Children, They’re Too Dangerous

While it is true that steam cleaners go well above the boiling point of water, modern machines designed for home use have a lot of safety features that are designed to prevent accidental burns or overflowing of hot water. However, the steam coming out still is very, very hot and obviously can burn, so these are not machines that children should be allowed to play with, and you should obviously exercise precautions when you are using them to ensure that children are not in the way of the jet.

Despite this, there are few injuries caused by these machines, and because they use no chemicals at all, you are able to reduce your children’s exposure to chemicals through environmental contact. If you have very young children, you can even go so far as to remove the majority of household chemicals that are a poisoning risk.

3.    My House Is Carpeted, I Don’t Need A Steam Cleaner

Would you believe that you can steam clean your carpet?! One of the biggest concerns for homeowners, particularly if they have light coloured carpet, is trying to keep their carpet looking clean and new. Unfortunately, carpet shampoo units have a reputation for shrinking carpets, leaving the house smelling like a wet dog for months afterwards, taking days to dry and much of the time not actually lifting any of the stains. With steam, that is all you are using, so there is a significantly slimmer chance that your carpet will have a chemical reaction with any of the cleaning products that would be used in shampooing machines. If you have a natural fibre carpet such as wool, then you may want to do a test area first, but generally, there are few reports of problems with either shrinkage or discolouration.

The biggest advantage to using steam to clean your carpets, other than the fact that it does actually lift up stains, is that the heat will kill any fleas, bugs or mites that have been setting up home happily in your carpet. This is a particularly great asset if you have a holiday home, AirBnB or rental property.

4.    I Just Wouldn’t Get The Use Out Of One

This is where you need to have a really good look around before you commit to purchasing a particular model. Look for an option that has some useful accessories that will allow you to clean your bathroom, kitchen and bedroom, as well as your floors. Most will also allow you to clean the upholstery in your car (yes, even vinyl and leather), your lounge or dining suite, and your mattress.

Being able to clean your mattress every 6 months in itself offers a major improvement in the health of your home. The heat in which you are able to use to clean your mattress will remove stains, but also kills any odours, and will ensure that your bed is free of bedbugs and mites. Most importantly, this is done without putting chemicals onto the surface that you will be sleeping on, so there are no fumes for you to breathe in.

Car detailers have turned to using steam in order to get the best, and fastest, interior clean. As with your home carpet, being able to use steam over shampoo means that you will not end up having to drive around in a car with saturated seats or carpets.

5.    I’ve Always Cleaned This Way

Just as there are still people who don’t see the point in a dishwasher and enjoy the ritual of washing dishes by hand, there will be people who don’t quite understand the benefits of using steam to clean their home or car. In both instances one of the first things that should be brought up is hygiene. Both a dishwasher and a steam cleaner can reach temperatures that your skin will not tolerate – meaning that cleaning this way is going to kill harmful bacteria by heat.
