Oh Dear Sylvia By Dawn French – Book Review #18
I was looking forward to reading Oh Dear Sylvia because I love Dawn French. I kept seeing it on the shelves at the charity shop and one day just decided to buy it.
Oh Dear Sylvia
Here’s the blurb from Goodreads:
Everyone knows the real Silvia, don’t they?
Silvia Shute lies in hospital in a coma. Family and friends gather at her bedside, each thinking they know the real Silvia. But do they? For Silvia hides a secret. One she can never tell. And as her visitors congregate so the truth about Silvia is slowly revealed. Again, and again and again . . .
I was expecting to read a really funny book. If the words, side-splitting and hilarious weren’t on the front cover, I wouldn’t have been set up for disappointment.
I would have started reading without the expectation of being made to laugh out loud and would have enjoyed the book for what it was.
It’s a sad read. I felt so sorry for Cassie and Jamie. They didn’t deserve to be treated like that and as a mother I know I wouldn’t ever be able to do that to my daughter.
I don’t know if I’ll read her other book, A Tiny Bit Marvellous. I keep getting tempted because it comes into the shop quite often but I think I’ll see what others think of it first before I buy it.
