A typical day on Slimming World

I used to do a photo diary of my food every day on another blog when I first started Slimming World and it helped keep me on track each day.

I’m not going to be doing that every day here but I thought some people might be interested to see my typical day and the kind of food you can have while following the Slimming World way of life.

I’ve tried many other diets but Slimming World is the only thing that has helped me lose weight and more importantly, keep it off in the long term.
While there are weight loss medications available, even they won’t be any help if you’re not maintaining a good diet and exercise routine.

Typical Day on Slimming World - sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms, fried egg, orange, yogurt and black coffee

For breakfast, I had fried mushrooms (whenever I talk about anything being fried, it has been fried in Frylight buttery), fried egg, tinned chopped tomatoes and 2 Tesco Cumberland sausages.
I aim to have at least half of my plate filled with speed foods which in this case, is the mushrooms and tomatoes.

The sausages are 1 syn each and the fried egg is a free food.

I followed it up with an orange (speed food) and a syn free yogurt. I had a black coffee with sweetener which is also free.

These purple plates are smaller than usual to help reduce my portions. They’re just a little bit bigger than a tea plate and because I fill it with lots of speed vegetables, it tricks my brain into thinking I’m having a huge portion when I’m having enough to satisfy my appetite, not overeating it because it’s nice!
If you like something sweet after a meal like I do, fruit and yogurt can be a lifesaver! I had a banana and a vanilla yogurt.

Mid-morning I started to feel a bit snackish so instead of reaching for the biscuits, I had half of a small melon (speed food) and a black coffee.

For lunch, I had leftover pork casserole (lean pork and parsnips are free food, carrots, onions and tomatoes are all speed foods. I added some vegetable stock, mixed herbs, and garlic powder – all free foods) with mashed swede.

Dinner was pasta bolognese with half a plate of broccoli for my speed food. I used to have the whole plate (a much bigger plate) full of just the pasta bolognese, relying on the onions, mushrooms, peppers and tomatoes for my speed portions but to follow SW properly, you really need to fill at least a third of your plate with speed so you’re reducing the amount of free food you’re eating, in this case, the pasta tubes. Because you can still eat rice and pasta and potatoes freely, you don’t feel deprived but reducing the amount by eating more speed really helps with weight loss.

After dinner, I had two oranges, a nectarine and banana (nectarines and oranges are speed foods, bananas are free) with a vanilla syn free yogurt (the yogurt’s not in the photo because I forgot it!).

Night-time Snacks

When we’re watching tv at night I get snacky so I save my healthy extras to have a toasted cheese, onion and ham sandwich (60g of wholemeal bread and 30g of cheese are healthy extra choices. My bread weighs 80g so I syn the extra at 1 syn per 10g) then I used my syns on Options hot chocolate (2 syns) and some kind of chocolatey treat! Tonight I had 2 teacakes which were 3 syns each.
I also froze some toffee yogurt mixed with quark and sweetener to make syn free ice cream.

The average person gets 5-15 syns a day but because I started at 31 stone and still weigh over 20 stone (23 stone 9lb), I can have 25 syns a day.
I’ve only had 12 syns today. I usually use them all but I exceeded my syns on Wednesday so I’m having fewer syns for the rest of the week to make up for it.

So that’s a typical day for me on Slimming World. On August 20th I’ll have been attending SW for 4 years. I lost 7 stone in my first year then got my 8.5 stone award a few months later. Since then I’ve put a stone back on and have been around this weight for over 2 years.
I still want to get to my goal weight of 12 stone and I know I will one day but until then, I keep going and not giving up because I never want to go back to the 31st me who had trouble moving and breathing.
