We’re going to miss you, Jack. Rest in Peace.
Yesterday started out as all Thursdays do; Ant was ready to leave for his mum’s by 8am and we rushed Ella on as she got ready to be dropped off by him, at breakfast club.
Aiden had left at 7.50am to bike to school and Kaycee took her time to get ready because she was walking to school with a friend rather than going to breakfast club.
Eventually they all left; I made breakfast and sat in peace to eat it.
I had a relaxing couple of hours then a phone call came that turned the relaxed, slow pace into worry and tension.
Ant always goes to help his mum and step dad, Jack, on Thursdays, with any jobs they need doing and this Thursday was no exception.
Nanny took him to the doctors for a blood test while Ant stayed to get on with the jobs but while he was getting out of the car, he had a fall, hit his head on the floor and was taken to hospital in an ambulance.
The first phone call from Ant wasn’t too worrying as I thought it was just a fall and they’d patch him up and send him home.
The next few phone calls saw Jack going downhill rapidly. Turns out he had a bleed on the brain and there was nothing they could do for him.
Ant spent the majority of the day at the hospital with his mum.
When I got the call to say they didn’t think he was going to last through the night my heart ached. I had to call Kellyann (Ant’s daughter from his first marriage) and let her know and we both had trouble speaking because we couldn’t stop crying.
Around 2.30 this morning his mum phoned to say that Jack had died :'( Ant went to the hospital to be with her and I told Aiden and the girls when they got up.
Kaycee and Ella are both close to Jack and Kaycee was very upset.
Nanny and Jack have looked after the girls since they were both babies. Kaycee seemed to have Jack wrapped round her little finger from a young age! She adored him and he let her away with everything!
Ella doesn’t totally understand yet what it means to be dead but she did ask if Nanny was very sad and who would look after Nanny now.
I told her we’d all look after Nanny now but she’s still going to be very sad for a long time.
Jack turned 90 this year and has been ill for most of it but we were able to celebrate his birthday with him a short a while ago when he was feeling better. It was a belated birthday get together and I’m so happy we all got to spend some time with him while he was able to enjoy our company.
Jack was a true gentleman and we’re all going to miss him terribly.
