International Literacy Day – My Favourite Quote
International Literacy Day
It’s International Literacy Day today and I’ve been asked by Viking Direct to share my favourite literary quote with you.
To do that, they sent me The. Most. Gorgeous. pen set I’ve seen. It has a feather quill and lots of different nibs. It also has a bottle of ink to dip the nib in. I’ve never used a dippy pen before, I’ve always had one with cartridges. I was stupidly excited to see the bottle of ink!
If I see pretty pens and notebooks, I can’t resist buying them. I have a notebook with matching pens in my handbag that I never use because they’re too lovely to spoil!
You may know that I’m an avid reader so choosing one favorite quote was proving to be very difficult! I found a couple that I like but they didn’t scream out at me if you know what I mean?
Then I thought about one of my most favourite stories ever and I knew which quote I wanted to use.
A Christmas Carol
My family would describe me as a little bit obsessed with Christmas and whenever I come across a copy of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, I have to buy it. The older the book, the better!
With that in mind, I picked my favourite quote:
“I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me. I will not shut out the lessons that they teach!”
― Charles Dickens,
I got out my quill and the little bottle of ink and started writing.
When I was a teenager I fell in love with a calligraphy set my dad bought me. I practiced loads and got quite good at it.
Like lots of things, though, if you stop doing something for a long time, it’s not always easy to do it when you try it again.
Calligraphy proved a challenge for me 30 years after first trying it and I gave up in the end. I just couldn’t get my writing neat enough.
After reading about International Literacy Day on the Unesco website, I discovered that this year the theme is ‘Literacy In A Digital World’. I turned to my laptop for help and it didn’t let me down.
Paint Shop Pro does any kind of lettering you could ever want and it does it perfectly!
So while I’ll always love using a pen, (especially one as lovely as my new quill) and buying stationery, sometimes, computers just do it better!
Here are a couple more of my favourite quotes, in honour of International Literacy Day 🙂
