Very Hungry Caterpillar Board Game

Our activity for yesterday was to make a board game that the girls could play with Granddad today after dinner.

We’re doing a Very Hungry Caterpillar play tomorrow so we decided to make that the theme for the board game as well.
I found a free story sequencing printable and printed out four copies.
KayCee cut them up and stuck them on to some coloured card.

I used some images I’d bought from PC Crafter (web site no longer trading, hence, no link) and printed them out to decorate the board and KayCee stuck white paper onto a piece we’d cut from a brown card board box.

We decided to use leaves to make the track round the board and on half of them we put the letter Q.
We stuck the leaves and decorations on the board, alternating the non Q leaves with the Q leaves.

We left it all to dry overnight and while it was drying, I printed out some questions and answers that I found on The Telegraph site. I copied and pasted them into Excel then added the answer to the end of the question. I then got Ant to show me how to use Microsoft Word to print them out, business card size, using the mail merge option.
KayCee wrote the rules on a sheet of paper then we collected four small stones from the garden, stuck a different sticker on each one then gave them a coat of varnish for added protection.

We pinched a die from another game then got it all set up for her, Ella, Daddy and Granddad to play.

The game is for 2-4 teams, each team consisting of an adult and a child.
The aim is to be the first to collect all the cards in the set, starting with the caterpillar and ending with the butterfly. The first to turn into a butterfly is the winner.
You earn the cards by answering the questions correctly when you land on a ‘Q’ leaf.

Everyone seemed to enjoy it; they even played it twice!

Adding this old post to Magic Moments. We loved making this board game and I think we’re going to design another one this week as we haven’t done any crafting for a while 🙂

An excellent game. The mix of questions meant that the girls knew the answers to some, the grown-ups knew the answers to others. There were some questions that we all knew the answers to and some that none of us knew. Granddad is 78 and Ella is 4 and we all had a good time.
